Wingless Sprints Oklahoma

Welcome to the 2018 Untied States Auto Club USAC Wingless Sprints Oklahoma WSO. 2018 will be the first year an Oklahoma Sprint Series will be sanctioned by USAC ever!

USAC Sprint Car racing is coming to the Sooner State in 2018 as the newly-formed Wingless Sprints Oklahoma (WSO) makes its on-track debut.

A number of dirt track venues have already signed on to host the series in the upcoming season, including Red Dirt Raceway (Meeker, Okla.), Oklahoma Sports Park (Ada, Okla.), Southern Oklahoma Speedway (Ardmore, Okla.) and Enid (Okla.) Speedway.

Wingless Sprint Car racing has been a fixture in Oklahoma for the past handful of years under the WOW Wingless Fast5Fridays banner, but this year, USAC WSO is expanding the rulebook to an economy engine rule that allows racers to utilize existing engines being raced in sprint cars and sport modifieds throughout the region, including current WOW/WLS engines with two or four-barrel carburetor options, current two-barrel champ sprint legal engines and sealed 305 c.i. engines.  In addition, a Hoosier tire point fund will reward USAC WSO drivers throughout the season.

“We are extremely excited to join USAC and its great tradition for the 2018 season,” WSO Director of Competition Kevin Barksdale said.  “We feel this series will allow 90% of the sprint cars in Oklahoma to race wingless and provide an avenue for not only up-and-coming micro sprint drivers, but also seasoned racers who want to go wingless sprint car racing.”

USAC Sprint Car history in the state of Oklahoma is fairly brief.  Just seven National events have been held there since 1966 with races won by the likes of Larry Dickson, Roger McCluskey, Ralph Liguori, Greg Weld, Mike Sweeney, Rickey Hood and, most recently, Jay Drake in 2004.  Over the past few seasons, the USAC Southwest Sprint Car Series has made Oklahoma a regular stop on its “Freedom Tour” with nine appearances since 2013.

Barksdale and Michelle Walden, public relations for WSO, have worked tirelessly to make the series a reality and to make inroads with wingless sprint car racing into a region rich in racing heritage.

“With the growing popularity of wingless racing throughout the U.S., we felt the timing was perfect to join USAC on this venture,” Barksdale said.  “We believe this series will be popular among competitors and fans as wingless racing’s reach expands to the south.”

A full USAC WSO racing schedule will be announced at a later date.  For more information on the series and the series’ rulebook, search USAC Wingless Sprints Oklahoma for all the details.

2015 Wingless Oklahoma Warriors Season Review!

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – September 20, 2015 - The Wingless Oklahoma Warriors have completed their second full season and as he did in the inaugural season for the series it was Norman, Oklahoma’s Koby Barksdale taking home the series championship in what turned out to be a very successful 2015 race season for the tour.

For the second year in a row the series kicked off their 2015 campaign at 81 Speedway in Park City, Kansas as a support division for the 5th annual “Air Capital Shootout,” which featured the National Championship Racing Association 360-ci sprint car series. The feature finale saw Blanchard, Oklahoma resident Gil White picking up the first victory of the new season with nine cars pit side for the March 28th event.

One week later it was off to the first of six events at the little, red-clay oval of Lawton Speedway in Lawton, Oklahoma where it was Bristow’s Tim Kent getting the best of a fifteen car field to take home his only series feature win of the season.

Outlaw Motor Speedway in Oktaha, Oklahoma held the next WOW event one week later and it was Collinsville resident Craig Carroll claiming his first career series victory as fifteen drivers came to compete atop the new-look track, now being run by last year’s series official Chris Smith.

A bit of a break seemed to be a time to regroup for Shelby Byrd as the young Oklahoma City driver would win the first of his three events, this coming in a return visit to Lawton Speedway where a season high seventeen drivers were pit side.

Barksdale, the reigning series champion, waited until June 6th before he claimed his first of two feature wins on the season as the tour visited Lawton Speedway once again.

The first of two feature victories in a row for Byrd came on June 20 at Lawton Speedway and once again, six days later in the series only 2015 appearance at Creek County Speedway in Kellyville.

A well-deserved, one month break for the series before their next to last appearance of the season at Lawton Speedway where, on July 25, it was Cyril, Oklahoma resident Cord Dodson claiming his first career series victory over a seventeen car field.

The birth place of the WOW (then called “e-sprints”), Brill Motor Speedway in Meeker, hosted the tour where a strong field of sixteen cars signed in and Barksdale claiming victory atop the quarter mile oval.

Lawton Speedway would host the final WOW point show for 2015 on August 15th and it was Dillion Burks turn to score his first career series victory and Barksdale would clinch the championship.

The final 2015 WOW top ten point standings looks like this: 1) Koby Barksdale 2110, 2) Ryan Dean 2) 1590, 3) Lee Wade 1330, 4) Gil White 1280, 5) Shelby Byrd 1250, 6) Chris Gordon 1210, 7) Dillion Burks 1140, 8) Ricky Crawford 1090, 9) James Fabian 1060, 10) Craig Carroll 950.

Thirty-five different drivers from three states (Oklahoma, Texas and California) competed in at least one of the ten events that were held. Byrd won a series-leading three events and Barksdale won two while Gil White, Tim Kent, Craig Carroll, Cord Dodson and Dillion Burks all earning one feature a piece.

The career feature winners for the two year, WOW series looks like this:

Koby Barksdale (11)

Shelby Byrd (4)

Kyle Cobb (3)

Gil White (2)

Tim Kent, Craig Carroll, Cord Dodson, Dillion Burks, David McDuffie (1)

The Wingless Oklahoma Warriors would like to thank the following series partners for their involved with the series during the 2015 race season: Harryman’s Insurance of Newcastle, Jeff Sleeper, Joey Buntin and O’Reilly Auto Parts, Steve Ochs and Showtime. A huge “thank you” to Marcy Edwards and Lawton Speedway as the “home track” for the WOW in 2015 as well as special thanks to 81 Speedway, Brill Motor Speedway, Outlaw Motor Speedway and Creek County Speedway for hosting at least one WOW event this season.

The WOW series could not be possible without the hard work and dedication from the following: James, Fabian, Gil White, Annette Leesekamp, Jim and Ernie Messmer, Annie Nestell, Jackie Jones, Kevin Barksdale and Michelle Walden.

Drivers will be honored Libby’s Café in Norman on December 5, 2015 at 8:00 PM. If you are interested in attending R.S.V.P. is required and you can find any and all information on the WOW 2015 banquet on their official facebook page for this event, 2015 Wingless Oklahoma Warrior Celebration Banquet.

White Wingless Warrior at 81 Speedway!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Park City, Kansas – March 28, 2015 - The Wingless Oklahoma Warriors opened their 2015 season this past Saturday night, March 28, at 81 Speedway in Park City, Kansas and it was Blanchard, Oklahoma driver Gil White picking up the victory before a capacity crowd. For the second year in a row the series was a support division for the NCRA winged sprint car opener and the 5th annual “Air Capital Shootout.”

Koby Barksdale and Gil White started on the front row for the twelve lap feature and it was White taking the lead as the green flag fell. Fourth starting Tim Kent settled into the runner up position with both drivers running the low side of the three-eighths mile oval.

A couple of caution flags dotted the first several laps and once racing action resumed, White had managed a six car length lead over Kent.

Barksdale, who slipped back to third on the start, went to his familiar top side of the track and would eventually catch Kent for the runner up position. With Kent down low and Barksdale up top, both drivers traded positions while White eased his way into a comfortable advantage.

Kent would take over the runner up position for good with just a couple of laps to go but there was no catching White as he went on to claim his second career series victory.

Kent settled for second while Barksdale came home third. Sixth starting Craig Carroll came home fourth while seventh starting James Fabian rounded out the top five.

Defending series champion Barksdale picked up the eight lap heat race victory.

The next event for the WOW will be this coming Saturday night, April 4, as they become a part of the season opener at Lawton Speedway in Lawton, Oklahoma. It will be the first of ten appearances at the quarter mile, red clay oval for the tour which has eighteen races slated on the 2015 schedule.

For more information on the Wingless Oklahoma Warriors check out their websitewww.winglessoklahomawarriors.comand their facebook page Wingless Oklahoma Warriors (WOW.)

The series would like to thank the following partners for the 2015 race season: Pole Position Raceway in OKC, Harryman’s Insurance of Newcastle, Chino’s Concrete in OKC, Cody Brewer Racing, G-Man Graphics, Barksdale Racing and Louis Boyd Racing Engines.

RELEASED JAN. 21, 2014

The Wingless Oklahoma Warriors are so excited to be returning to 81 Speedway in Park City, KS supporting NCRA sprints on Saturday, March 28, 2015. Last year it was the very first race ever of the WOW warriors and the night ended up handing the first trophy to Koby Barksdale of Norman, Ok., with Paul Johnson Racing. Last year at 81 Speedway we had a car count of 8 WOW cars and now in our second year we are on the edge of our seats wondering just how many cars will be there on our opener night of our second season. Come one, come all because this will truly be a battle with fresh shiny, polished cars and gung ho racers that have been itching all winter long to flat foot that pedal and throw those wingless cars into the turns. Check out this awesome article from David Smith Jr.!

Now for some thoughts from our good friend J.D. Porter and the Hog Wagon & his 2014 WOW Season Thoughts and Year in Review

With the first ever Season in the books for the Wingless Oklahoma Warriors (WOW) Series, thought I would give some post season info and thoughts.

26 Cars competed at 1 time or another with the Series at 5 different facilities in 2014.

Drivers consisted of the very new and first timers in a full size sprint to longtime veterans in the sport.

5 different A main winners and some variety for the series as newcomer Shelby Byrd picked up an A Main win in just his 4th start and then the veterans took over the remainder of the wins with David McDuffie 1 win, Gil White 1 win, Kyle Cobb 3 wins, and Koby Barksdale with 5 wins which propelled him along with consistent finishes to a 2014 WOW Non Wing Championship.

Rookie of the Year Honors went to Casey Jones in the 52J Sprinter.

The new series had it’s up’s and down’s and just like any new series went through growing pains but it gave race fans a different alternative with no wing up top an goes along with that ol school approach which brings back days gone by when the wing was only on an Airplane and the Open wheel Car was Bouncin around & Rut’s & Gut’s and don’t lift till ya see the Checks!!!.

Some over the past year have said this deal would die in a year, seems more cars being built from what I have seen/heard and talked to.

Some also say it’s a beginner’s class , REALLY!!!!, just wondering how you can have a beginner’s class in today’s Sprint Car Racing??, just shows a lack of knowledge of racing on their part. This is a Series that if ya build a Car/Motor and it meets all legality of the rules posted then bring it and race it with the series, I don’t care if your Brady Bacon, Bryan Clauson, Dave Darland, Tracey Hines, Koby Barksdale, Mike Ramsey, Ricky Crawford, Kevin Barksdale or whomever?? Just follow the rules given and show up and race.

Some also have that pay syndrome phobia about the class, well I can tell ya in about any series that ya race with, you’ll be lucky to pay for your trip to and from the track and general expenses to race that night and ALL else ,,,,,, well just open up that wallet and or check book is all I will say. So ya might as well enjoy what your doing.

Really proud to have been a part of this Non Wing Series in it’s first year, was not a stellar year for the Hog Wagon by no means but we got a win and take what else happened and ya just move on, enjoyed the first WOW Banquet back in Dec. as all had a good time as Trophies, Jackets and Products were handed out.

Congrats again to Koby Barksdale on the first ever 2014 WOW Championship and to Casey Jones on his RoY accomplishment and to all who helped get and keep this deal going:, The WOW Board Members, Annette Leeskamp, Chris Smith, Dennis Crow for all their help throughout 2014 and to the Sponsors as well.
